Southern Ground Hornbill (Burcorvus leadbeateri)


Inhabits: African savannas south of Equator

Lives in small family groups with only dominant pair breeding, but all birds assist in feeding the young.

Eats any animal that it can overpower including hares, squirrels, snakes, lizards and insects.

Nests in natural holes in dead or live trees Although two eggs may be laid, 4 or 5 days apart, only one check is reared due to sibling rivalry. The chick is dependant on the parent birds for about one year.
